December 16th @ Free Times Café

Special All-Request Night!

Sometimes it’s not really about us, it’s about other folks. It’s not what we want; it’s what other people want. Sure you don’t like Swiss Chalet, but would it really kill you to go there once in a while because your grandmother really likes it (and let me tell you, grandmothers like Swiss Chalet, I think it’s something about the sauce, but I don’t really want to think about it too much),

And sure it would be better if your niece preferred music other than Justin Bieber or One Direction or whatever the current disposable pop confection is (especially because she’s 23), but if that’s what she wants then stop trying to make her listen to Muddy Waters or Bob Dylan or even Kate Bush (who you also don’t really like but you think she might like and then you could use that as way to get her to like what you think she should like).

Sometimes it’s just time to do what other people want you to do because that’s what they want. So surrender, give up some control and make your purpose be to bring pleasure to others they way they would like to have pleasure given.

And lest you think this little missive is becoming 50 Shades of Gordon’s Acoustic Living Room, it is, to some extent, because our next show, on December 16, is our annual all-request show. For 11 months of the year we play the songs that we want to play but at least once year we change things up and let others choose what we will play.

I should be clear; there are some parameters for this. We won’t just play anything; it has to be a song that we’ve played before. For some bands that might be a problem but not for us – we have a repertoire of over 350 songs – that’s right 350 songs – and while none have been made famous by Justin Bieber, One Direction or even Kate Bush there is still a lot to choose from.

Don’t believe me (and why not by the way, have I ever lied to you before) just click here to see the complete list of the songs we do. And while you’re perusing, pick a few or 10 or 20 or whatever and add your voice to the voting throngs. Even if you can’t attend the show, you will have played a big role in telling us what to do – at least for one evening.

Samples from the All-Request Show @ Free Times Café
“Famous Blue Raincoat”, “Glenora Ferry”, “Dream Lover”,
“P Stands For Paddy”, “Taxman”, “Orange Blossom Special”

And if you are planning to join us we are playing, as usual, at the Free Times Café (College and Major just west of Spadina) and, as usual, the show starts at 8 and there is no cover and there is plenty of food and drink (and in case you didn’t read this very carefully and missed it the first time, the show is on Sunday, December 16). And while I would like to think that all our shows make people happy and are enjoyable, perhaps this one, because we’re doing it all for you, will be even more special (or not).

Hope to see you there.
